Summary
Survival rate for the childhood cancers has improved remarkably. This situation results in increasing number of young adults who undergone cancer treatment. In this group of patients late side effects are observed, such as second malignancies, endocrine, cardiac, pulmonary complications, renal dysfunction, osteoporosis, impaired fertility. Obesity and metabolic syndrome are also reported more often than in general population. Complications of the metabolic syndrome such as atherosclerosis, strokes and death caused by other cardiovascular disorders are more common and start in younger age. The occurrence of metabolic syndrome is strictly connected with the type of neoplasm, its localization and undergone treatment. Especially patients with head tumors and patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia who undergone radiotherapy of the head have a greater risk of developing such complications. However high percentage of survivors lead a life style predisposing to the development of metabolic syndrome. Thus there is a need of regular screening for metabolic disorders and education among patients.
