Summary
Introduction. Early childhood caries (ECC) is the most prevalent chronic disease in children in many countries and societies. When left untreated, rapid progression of its most aggressive form – severe ECC (S-ECC) can destroy the primary dentition in a short period of time.
Aim. The aim of the study was to combine the common knowledge of S-ECC aetiology with the novel findings. ECC is an infectious disease of bacterial origin- it is caused by commensal oral microbiota. Streptococcus mutans is a well known species and it has been recognized to be the primary pathogen in caries but it is not detected in all cases of the disease. Recently many studies based on advanced methods of genetics have been carried out to evaluate the microbiota of ECC and to find species other than S. mutans associated with caries. Scardovia wiggsiae, which was recognized in recent times, seems to be a candidate to be a new caries pathogen.
Conclusions. Understanding the causes of caries disease is essential to introduce an appropriate profilaxis and an effective treatment.
