Summary
Antibiotics are used in paediatric dentistry to treat infections and avoid high risk of bacteriemia. It is estimated that ca. 10% of all administered antibiotics are prescribed because of oral infections. Due to risk arising from the antibiotics’ side effects, including the formation of resistant strains, it is required for dentists to know indications for usage. Despite many research issues concerning antibiotic therapy remain the subject of debate and require further investigation. International scientific societies develop recommendations and protocols for the usage of antibiotics on basis of the currently available knowledge. The most important issues are: individual treatment, physical examination, and consultations with experts of relevant fields of medicine for patients with systemic infections.
The aim of the study is to present principles of treatment of oral infections, issues related to antibiotic prophylaxis and reduction of infectious complications for patients with general diseases.
