Summary
Introduction. Fluoride in toothpastes has a proven clinical efficacy, but safety of its use depends on the amount of paste and appropriate concentration. Excess fluoride, especially in patients less than 6 years old may be associated with the risk of fluorosis. Therefore, usage of toothpastes according to current recommendations is extremely important.
Aim. Measurement of toothpaste amount and concentration, applied by parents.
Material and methods. 120 parents of children aged 1-7 years were divided into three groups: A – 1-<2 years; B – 2-<6 years; C – ≥ 6 years. Questionnaires regarding type of the paste were filled. Weights of toothpastes were measured and compared with guidelines.
Results. Average children’s age was 4.9 years (SD ± 1.66). Average weight of paste in all groups was 0.57 g (SD ± 0.324). In group A, the average weight of the paste applied by parents was 0.52 g (SD ± 0.26). 80% of parents used more, and 20% less than the recommended amount. In group B, the average weight of the paste was 0.55 g (SD ± 0.335). 75% of parents used more, and 9% less than the recommended amount. 16% used the appropriate amount. In group C, the average weight of the paste was 0.60 g (SD ± 0.316). 57.5% of parents used more and 35.5% of parents less than the recommended amount. 7% used the appropriate amount of toothpaste.
Conclusions. Usage of toothpastes with insufficient or too high concentration of fluoride and applying wrong amount of paste by parents, proves the need for intensive education.
