Summary
Introduction. It is well established that periodontitis can directly contribute to pre-term delivery and low birth weight through induction of systemic inflammatory immune response which affects pregnancy.
Aim. The main aim of this study was to assess the gynaecologists’s and pregnant women awareness and knowledge about the influence of periodontal disease on pregnancy.
Material and methods. A survey was conducted among 130 pregnant women and 120 gynaecologists. An anonymous questionnaire comprised of 11 questions for gynaecologists and 15 questions for pregnant patients. The data was summarized in a table and presented graphically.
Results. The results show that the most of the gynaecologists consider their knowledge about prophylactic dental procedures as sufficient enough to work with pregnant women. On the basis of the questionnaire authors noticed, that the majority of pregnant women have never asked about the impact of periodontal disease on pregnancy and have not been informed about this problem by the gynaecologist or GDP.
Conclusions. Revealed improper gynaecological approach to the problem of periodontitis can be an outcome of poor co-operation between the gynaecologists and the dentists. All of these factors need effective improvement to efficiently prevent periodontitis during pregnancy.
