Summary
Model of nutrition of Paleolithic ancestors of contemporary humans was characterized by lack of milk and dairy products, cereals, starchy vegetables, pulses, and salt. Meat and offal of hunted animals and gathered plant foods were the main constituents of their diet. This translated to high intake of protein, and relatively low of carbohydrates. Total consumption of fat was similar, of saturated fatty acids was lower, of polyunsaturated higher, and n-6/n-3 ratio lower than that of contemporary populations. Consumption of cholesterol, fiber, micronutrients, potassium, and antioxidants was high, and intake of sodium was low. Model of nutrition of hunter-gatherers was an inspiration for formulation of modern Paleolithic diet that, according to the authors, is consistent with human genetic heritage that determines metabolism. Its principles and influence on health was described. The possible usefulness of the diet in prevention of chronic non communicable diseases requires further research. This problem is discussed in the other part of the paper.
