Summary
Saliva constitutes one of the human body fluids. Saliva has a whole range of functions, i.a. digestive, protective, nutritional or excretory. As it consists of proteins, including immunoglobulin, it also fulfills defensive function. Secretory IgA is regarded as the most substantial factor of adaptive immune system in oral cavity. Owing to its ability to coat and agglutinate microorganisms, bacteriostatic action, prevention the adhesion to epithelium or neutralization of bacteriotoxins.
The aim of the present thesis was to discuss the influence of secretory immunoglobulin A on the progression of dental caries.
It may be assumed that there exists a relation between the concentration of SigA in the saliva and the progression of dental caries. However, the available sources does not answer unequivocally whether the correlation is positive or negative. Further studies and standardization of methods are required.
