Summary
Introduction. Every stage of human life is intimately connected with the concept of health and disease. Close observation of child’s behaviour enables to assess its development reliably. Any abnormalities can be corrected at the level of primary health care.
Aim. Acquiring knowledge about the incidence of diseases, pathogens and age groups most vulnerable to them.
Material and methods. The group of 366 people living in Kępice borough and aged from 0 to 18 constituted the object of my research. Medical records covering the period from 1st October 2010 to 30th September 2011 was thoroughly analyzed. In order to obtain reliable results Pearson’s Chi-Square and V-Cramer’s statistic tests were employed. With this end in view 10.0 Statistica program (Statsoft, Poland) was used. Data verification was performed at a significance level of p ≤ 0.05. The main objective of my research was to gain knowledge about the number of cases, the factors causing diseases and age groups susceptible to illnesses.
Results. Within the study period 649 cases (65 types of diseases) were reported. Younger children were diagnosed most frequently with disorders of either respiratory system or digestive system. Youth instead was diagnosed with disorders of skeletal system and muscular system. In addition they suffered from mechanical injuries as well. Chronic diseases were diagnosed in 13% of examined children.
Conclusions. Diseases in childhood are dependent on age. Children were diagnosed most frequently with disorders of respiratory system. Children at the age of 1 as well as in the period of adolescence use the primary health care most frequently.
