Introduction. Diverticulosis is domed mucosa and muscle part of the colon. More and more people living longer, increasing the availability of diagnostic imaging and poor eating habits among people living in developed countries means that the number of people diagnosed with diverticulosis will be greater, so it’s important to develop and prepare physicians to provide advice associated with such people with diverticulosis diet, to prevent the diverticulare disease.
Aim. The objective of this research was to determine the amount of intake of fiber in the diet of people with diagnosed diverticulosis.
Material and methods. Study to assess the level of dietary fiber intake by patients with diagnosed diverticulosis was conducted in 2010 among patients of Proctology Outpatients Room in Doctor Pirogow’s High Specialized Hospital. The study was conducted by interview of food intake in the last 24 hours. The survey used a questionnaire which obtained information on consumption of products, foods and beverages in the days preceding the survey. Then obtained information about the products consumed were summarized in tables to count the daily intake of dietary fiber in 24 hours. Patients also were asked two questions to check their knowledge of fiber consumed.
Results. After converting the amount consumed in dietary fiber provided by people with diagnosed diverticulosis questionnaires, the authors found that the average dietary fiber intake was 12.6 grams per day. In a survey 26 (65.0%) patients did not know what is the recommended daily intake of fiber in the diet. Among the 40 interviewed patients with diverticulosis, 14 (35.0%) patients had a different opinion on this topic. In the research 30 (75.0%) patients with diagnosed diverticulosis do not know about the protective role of dietary fiber intake. Among the 40 interviewed patients, 10 (25.0%) knew that consuming adequate amounts of fiber in the diet protects against the occurrence of diverticular disease or diverticulitis.
Conclusions. The results of the study shows that patients do not eat in their diet recommended daily amount of dietary fiber. Patients participating in the survey had no knowledge of what is recommended daily doses of dietary fiber intake, and did not know about the protective effects of fiber in people with diagnosed diverticulosis. The authors believe that medical personnel, including physicians, dietitians, nurses, should the provision of medical services affect the change in eating habits among patients diagnosed with diverticulosis and inform them of the need to consume adequate amounts of fiber in the diet. The diet of people with diverticulosis should be provided to patients products containing valuable source of insoluble fiber in order to prevent future occurrence of the diverticular disease and its complications.
