Summary
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is one of the most frequently occurring functional disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. It is characterised by pain and/or abdominal cavity discomfort as well as abdomen flatulence, changing of defecation rhythm and stool consistency. IBS is still the social and economical problem. It is estimated that about 15-20% of population of western countries suffers from IBS. Until now, there has been no etiological and diagnostic markers of the disease. The diagnosis of IBS is established when organic disorders are excluded and 3rd Rome Criteria might be helpful. The Irritable Bowel Syndrome treatment may be difficult and needs skillful, patient and fully using of different therapeutic possibilities. It is caused by complex and still not well known etiopathogenesis of IBS, the chronic character of the disease and the lack of effective pharmacotherapy. One of the elements of IBS therapy are dietetic modifications. Very often, the diet is what helps in recovering, it may also be the only medicine. That is why, a very significant element of effective treatment is an appropriate nutrition adjustment. This paper summarizes the actual information about diet in IBS.
