Streszczenie
The role of selenium in neonatal jaundice has not been established. Selenium levels in plasma were investigated in the third day of life in 102 term newborns: 43 healthy, 41 with pathologic jaundice of unknown etiology and 18 with breast-feeding jaundice. The mean selenium concentration in newborns with pathologic jaundice of unknown etiology (36.1 mg/l) was significantly lower (p <0.03) than in healthy infants (41.9 mg/l). Concentration of selenium weakly correlated with bilirubin level (r = -0.23). The mean selenium concentration was significantly higher (p <0.01) in males (47.9 mg/l) than females (37.2 mg/l). The inverse correlation observed between selenium and bilirubin was stronger in males (r = -0.46). A negative correlation between plasma selenium in neonates and mother´s age was found (r = -0.7).
