Streszczenie
The paper presents progress in radiotherapy for cancer and perspectives for the next century. Technological developments are discussed in relation to new techniques of irradiation, the improvement of treatment precision and dose dosimetry. Contribution of experimental and clinical radiobiology is considered as the main basis for unconventional dose fractionation schedules. Better knowledge of radiobiological mechanisms, mainly tumor repopulation reflecting the importance of time factor has led to the concept of tactics of combined treatment instead of individually applied therapeutic modalities. Continued dialog between science and practice allows for recognizing traps and for improving quality and efficacy of radiation therapy. Molecular biology and higher precision in dose delivery give interesting perspectives for radiotherapy as a part of combined treatment modalities for cancer.
