Streszczenie
The microscopic evaluation of histologic or cytologic material is still the most reliable method in tumor diagnosis. Improvement of clinical cytology, particularly introduction of fine needle aspiration biopsy, allows making therapeutical decisions based on cytological evaluation alone. Special techniques like histochemistry, electron microscopy, immunopathology and recently the techniques of molecular biology allow improving diagnosis, by giving more precise information regarding tumor histogenesis and its biology. Molecular biology techniques and genetic studies allow understanding the carcinogenesis but these methods so far can not replace conventional diagnostic approaches. Pathological reports should consist of the diagnosis and additionally -information regarding well documented prognostic factors like size of the tumor, lymph nodes metastases and histologic grade of the tumor.
