Summary
Nowadays the frequency of onychomycosis in Poland as well as in the whole world is increasing. In this article diagnostic procedure and therapy is described. Moreover, the new classification of onychomycosis, including five clinical types dependent on the mechanism of fungal invasion and clinical manifestation is presented. Because several nail disorders could be of similar clinical eatures, special attention was paid to differential diagnosis and the importance of mycological examination. New therapeutic modalities were described. Terbinafine and itraconazol treatments are compared according to the mechanism of action, efficacy, specrum of activity, safety and farmacoeconomical aspects. Finally, the disinfection procedure, being an important element of the effective therapy is reported.
