Summary
Demographic data indicate that percentage of elderly people in population and average life expectancy increase systematically. Expenditures on medical and social care depend on the health state of population. It has been estimated that only one in five people at age of 70 years is in good health. Supply of medical and social care for elderly is a great challenge for Poland as geriatric care organization and education in this field are amongst the worst in Europe. The model of care is changing. The family involvement in care decreases and family has been replaced by other subjects. Along with growing third age population the economic and organizational issues become more significant. There is demand for cooperation of home care and professional care institutions to optimize costs of caring for elderly. The costs of giving medical treatment to old patients could be lower if professional and specialist care were available. Polypragmasy is also important medical and economic problem of geriatric patients. Answers for many questions about health, economic and social state of people in advanced age will arise along with realization of Polsenior project which started in 2008 and will be executed within 36 months.
