Summary
Increased levels of female sex hormones during pregnancy contribute to unpleasant syndromes such as nausea and vomiting, constipation, flatulence. Pregnant women often suffer because of heart burn and gestational edema.
The disorders mentioned above (except hyperemesis gravidarum) are not direct menace both for fetus and mother, but they are inconvenient and decrease the pregnant women´s quality of life. Pregnant women without problems such as nausea and vomiting have been noted to have improved pregnancy outcomes, including fewer miscarriages, preterm deliveries, and stillbirths as well as fewer instances of fetus with low birth weight, growth retardation and mortality.
Therefore to avoid such complications and reduce the painful disorders during pregnancy, physicians need to be familiar with the low-risk nonpharmacological treatment methods available.
Nonpharmacological treatment of woman with mild nausea and vomiting of pregnancy should include dietary changes. Affected pregnant woman should be instructed to eat frequent, small meals and to avoid meals with smells and food textures that cause nausea. Proper choice of products as well as reduction of the improper food, appropriate schedule of mealtimes, choosing the right way of preparing the meals can help to alleviate painful ailment during pregnancy and avoid further complications. Dietetic treatment which is introduced early enough allows to avoid later pharmacological treatment
