Summary
Pruritus could accompany many systemic disorders. Because of complicated and not fully known pathogenesis of itching, the current antipruritic treatment is not very efficacious in all patients suffering from itching. Histamine is regarded as the main mediator of itching. However, also many other substances may play a role in the particular itchy diseases. There are many agents, both local and systemic, which have antipruritic activity. Also some non-pharmacological methods, e.g. foto- or fotochemotherapy, are helpful in the therapy of itching. The current study presents the guidelines for management of pruritus occurring in systemic diseases.
