Causalgia – burning pain, allodynia, and hyperpathia usually in the hand or foot after partial injury of a nerve or one of its major branches. The nerves most commonly involved are the median, the sciatic. Spontaneous pain occurs which is described as constant and burning, and is exacerbated by light touch, stress, temperature change or movement of the involved limb, visual and auditory stimuli and emotional disturbances. Abnormalities in skin blood flow may develop. Edema is usually present. Sympathetically maintained pain (SMP) may be present. In cases with SMP, sympatholytic interventions may provide temporary or permanent pain relief.
