Summary
The paper presents legal, moral and medical aspects of treatment of elderly patients with proximal femoral fractures. Despite the high risk, resulting from concomittant diseases (heart, circulation, respiratory and metabolic) the surgical treatment is avocated as the only one giving a chance to restore the patients standing position.
From 1992 to 2001, 823 patients aged 65 and over were treated. The great majority of them (91%) was qualified for surgery. It is to stress that the treatment of an elderly patient must have a holistic character and encompass not only medical, but also psychological and social aspects.
