Summary
This paper describes a case of a 16-month-old boy hospitalized in the Pediatric Department of the Warsaw Children’s Hospital who developed a severe form of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) during parenteral antibiotic therapy with cefuroxime.
Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) constitutes a specific diagnostic problem in the population of children under 2 years of age. The clinical picture of CDI in young children most often takes the form of diarrhea with accompanying fever and abdominal pain. Severe and complicated course is relatively rare. Available laboratory tests do not allow the distinction between the symptomatic form and being the carrier, which may reach 70% in young children. Most importantly, other causes of clinical symptoms should be excluded in the diagnostic process. The fulminant form is an indication for the immediate initiation of treatment.
Improper treatment or delayed diagnosis may lead to a number of complications including death.
