Summary
The clinical and pathophysiological significance of magnesium deficit and excess is discussed. The magnesium deficit is from the clinical point of view more often encountered. Dietary intake, gastrointestinal and renal losses and shifts between extra- and intracellular compartments are essential factors determinating body stores and extracellular concentrations of magnesium. The clinical picture of magnesium deficit or excess often lack specifity. Many diseases may lead to secondary magnesium disturnances mimicking some pathological states. Physicians should be familiar with the numerous conditions that are risk factors for magnesium deficiency and in which magnesium supplementation should be considered.
