Summary
Introduction. In order to promote natural breastfeeding and increase awareness of this matter number of initiatives have been taken. However, the aspect of mother’s nutrition during lactation has been overlooked too frequently.
Aim. The aim of this paper was an analysis of the parents’ of children aged up to 12 months staying in the Paediatric Hospital knowledge of mother’s nutrition during breastfeeding. Also, the subject of an analysis was an issue whether gender, age, place of residence or education of parents had influenced the knowledge of mother’s nutrition during breastfeeding.
Material and methods. The research was conducted in the Paediatric Hospital. The original questionnaire consisting of 18 questions regarding the mother’s nutrition principles during breastfeeding was used as a research tool.
Results. Parents who participated in the research have a knowledge of woman’s nutrition during lactation. Women more frequently than men are aware of advised water requirements for breastfeeding mother generally. Some of the surveyed parents expressed a belief that some groups of products should be eliminated from the diet of breastfeeding women.
Conclusions. 1. There is an unfounded belief expressed by the respondents that some groups of food should be absolutely avoided during lactation (legume, products that cause flatulence, fried products and spicy food). 2. Gender, age, place of residence as well as parent’s education do not influence the knowledge of the breastfeeding mother’s diet. 3. Too frequent, unfounded restricting a diet may lead to resignation from natural breastfeeding by young mother. 4. It is crucial to take educational measures addressed to all people planning to became parents.
