Summary
One of the most complex and difficult health care decision is whether to use postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy (HRT). This therapy has undoubtful benefits, but, unfortunately, it is not free of risks. In this review, the influence of HRT on woman´s organs is presented, and the newest, but still one of many, propositions of prescribing of the substitution in different groups of women is discussed. The decision must be undertaken after considering benefits and risks for an individual patient. The main indication for HRT is alleviation of the symptoms of menopause and prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Despite of recent enthusiasm, the effect of HRT on the risk of cardiovascular disease remains uncertain. In healthy women, the risk of the breast cancer after HRT increases considerably after 5 years of therapy. In women with breast cancer HRT is not recommended.
