Summary
Tinea pedis is the second, according to the frequency of occurence, form (after onychomycosis) of fungal skin infections. It frequently coexists with other forms of dermatomycoses, mainly with toenail onychomycosis. The most common pathogens of tinea pedis are dermatophytes, especially Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. There are three main types of tinea pedis: interdigital, dishidrotic and desquamative (hyperkeratotic). Some authors distinguish the fourth form– an ulcerative one. Routine diagnostic procedure is based on mycology, e.i. direct microscopic examination and culture. Topical treatment is usually effective, however long– lasting infections with marked hyperkeratosis require systemic therapy.
