Summary
Dementia is common in the elderly population and recognised as one of the giants of geriatrics. It can be mistakenly considered as part of the normal ageing. On the other hand, potentially reversible causes of dementia may be overlooked. Early identification of dementing illnesses improves the outcome for reversible disease and may also enhance the management of incurable dementias. The paper presents an approach to the diagnosis and treatment of dementia useful in primary care for the elderly.
