Summary
Obesity develops as a result of long-term positive energy balance, with the participation of genetic, environmental factors and comorbidities. Obesity and overweight is currently one of the major health problems in many countries around the world, including Poland. The problem of excessive body mass is also increasingly affecting children and adolescents, and the number of overweight or obese people is rising fast in this group. Currently, every fifth child in Poland is obese or overweight. As overweight, we define excessive accumulation of adipose tissue, that does not meet the criteria for diagnosing obesity (BMI 85-95th percentile). Obesity is defined as excessive accumulation of adipose tissue leading to eterioration of health (> 95th percentile). Overweight and obesity coexist with many chronic diseases and complicates the course of comorbidities. Excessive body weight is an important risk factor of premature death. Obesity prevention and treatment can improve the course of co-morbid diseases and should be the basis of patient care.
