Summary
Onions, one of the most common vegetables, have been used for thousands of years for both food and health. It contains many micro- and macro-elements and organic substances that give it its characteristic taste and invaluable healing properties. The article presents the possible therapeutic benefits of using onions. These include antibacterial, antiplatelet, fibrinolytic and antineoplastic effect as well as affecting immunity and digestion. Regular consumption of onions protects the body against free radicals, and also has an extremely beneficial effect on the cardiovascular system. Already a small amount of onions added to the daily diet regulates the level of lipids, reduces blood viscosity and reduces the risk of cardiovascular events. In Poland, onion production occupy a leading position in terms of crop size, but the consumption of this popular vegetable is still insufficient. Spreading information about the positive effect of onions and increasing its supply in the daily diet can give multidirectional therapeutic effects.
