Summary
For each practitioner, the definitions of “pharmacology” (the science of therapeutic agents and their impact on the body) and “pharmacotherapy” (the science of therapeutic use of drugs) are known. Every day we meet with patients whose treatment should be individualized due to their age or the occurrence of associated pathological conditions. It leads to the individualized therapy, in which maximizing effectiveness and safety are the most important issues.
The goals of clinical pharmacology are: increasing the safety and effectiveness of pharmacological treatment and to improve patient care. The basic rule of pharmacotherapy is to obtain the best therapeutic effect with the least adverse effects, unpleasant for the patient.
In the field of individualized therapy, we should take into account: physiological differences (physical condition of the patient, age, sex, genotype, pregnancy, diet), pathological differences and drug interactions.
Aspects mentioned in this scientific research should result in the improvement of patient care through the use of safe and effective drugs and the extension of knowledge about the effects of drugs and their proper use in patients.
