Summary
Men know it for ages and its anti-aging properties were used even by pre-Columbian civilizations. Cocoa preparations diversify meals of millions of people all over the world. Chocolate’s influence on organism is neglected through its mainly dessert form. Most consumers considers it even as high-calorie, nutritionally valueless snack. However cocoa seeds are important source of many biologically active substances, magnesium as well. Their deficiency in diet causes various metabolic disorders, on cellular level likewise systemic. Especially valuable ingredient of cocoa seeds are polyphenols characterized by their pleiotropic effect. By dint of reactive oxygen species elimination they reduce intracellular oxidative stress, protect vascular endothelium and perform anti-inflammatory functions. Significant is also influence of mentioned elements on nervous system hygiene. The purpose of following thesis is overall analysis of cocoa intake advantages, particularly insisting on chocolate with high cocoa concentration. Negative effects of chocolate consumption and contraindications for several patients groups were mentioned as well.
