Summary
Parabens, otherwise known as nipagins, are some of the most commonly used preservatives. Their popularity of the application is related to the broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity. They are used not only in the cosmetic industry but also in the manufacture of medicines or food. These are para-hydroxybenzoic acid esters in the form of crystalline solids, colorless, odorless. Parabens include methylparaben, ethylparaben, butylparaben, isopropylparaben, propylparaben, isobutylparaben and benzylparaben. Parabens have estrogenic activity. This means that they have the ability to bind to estrogen receptors, both α and β. This ability can negatively affect the hormonal management of the human body. Excessive supply of parabens to our body, whether in the form of cosmetics, medicines or even food, can cause serious illness. There are reports that the frequent application of antiperspirants containing nipagine to skin can contribute to the development of breast cancer. Also important is the influence of parabens on the skin. Applying cosmetics to paraben skin can reduce the ability of keratinocytes to proliferate and, in combination with UVB radiation, causes oxidative stress. Nipagins can also cause allergies.
