Summary
Infertility can be defined as the inability to conceive during one year of regular intercourse without any birth control techniques. Approximately 15% of couples who wish to have a child and failed, have problems with infertility. Genetic reasons are one of the most essential causes of human infertility in both, men and female. Consequently the identification of genetic factors is now a good practice for appropriate management of the infertile couples. The genetic causes of infertility include chromosomal abnormalities, single gene disorders (gene mutations) and phenotypes with multifactorial inheritance. The genetic testing for couples classified for clinical application of assisted reproductive technology, always should be done. It allows to assess the genetic risk, which can have direct impact on reproductive failure and may disclose the risk of genetic diseases in offspring. This review article tries to summarize actual knowledge in matter of genetic causes of human infertility as well as current research in the genetic basis of infertility and perspectives for a couples having problems with starting a family.
