Summary
Introduction. Teeth eruption is a complex process, usually with no continous character and it is influenced by environmental, genetic or paragenetic factors. It is considered that the differences in the time of appearance of the teeth in the oral cavity are under the genetical strong control with a small but significant effect of the external environment.
Aim. The aim of the study is to assess the influence of selected factors on the date of appearance of the first milk teeth in children from the city of Kraków and it’s surroundings.
Material and methods. There were examined 1,206 children, including 601 boys and 605 girls aged 2 to 16 years, registered into the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Dental Institute UJCM in Krakow in 2010-2013. The data obtained from an interview were recorded in a specially prepared questionnaire.
Results. The influence of the time of birth, the method of feeding the baby, place of residence, sex, birth weight and length on the time of eruption of the teeth were established. There was also examined the relationship between the influence of drugs taken by the mother during pregnancy and the child in the neonatal period and infancy on the time of eruption of teeth. The average age of appearance of the first milk tooth for boys was 6.77 months and 6.65 months for girl.
Conclusions. There was no correlation in terms of appearance of the first milk teeth with gender, birth length, type of feeding and medications. There was established delayed first teething in the case of premature and low-weight natals.
