Summary
Introduction. Patients after a spinal cord injury due to accidents, the help comes Foundation for Active Rehabilitation (FAR). Established on the initiative of people with disabilities. This Foundation conducts a comprehensive program aimed at the activation of social and professional.
Aim. Determination of the influence of participation of individuals with spinal cord injury in Active Rehabilitation camps on their improved functioning in terms of performing activities of daily living.
Material and methods. The study involved 87 individuals with spinal cord injury, participating in the Active Rehabilitation camp in the SAJGON Independent Life Center in Ciechocinek. Their mean age was 33.4 ± 8.945. Physical efficiency with respect to performing activities of daily living was assessed using the Barthel scale and a short questionnaire on injury and sociodemographic factors. The study was based on a diagnostic survey conducted before and after the stay at the Active Rehabilitation camp.
Results. Before the Active Rehabilitation camp, the mean score on the Barthel scale was 31.09 ± 24.405, which indicates moderate dependence bordering on heavy dependence. After the Active Rehabilitation camp, the score was twice as high (66.78 ± 21.914), which corresponds to the middle range of moderate dependence. Significant correlations were found of Barthel scale scores with age, level of educational attainment, type of injury and period of disability.
Conclusions. Participation in Active Rehabilitation camps significantly improves the functioning of patients with spinal cord injury with respect to all the analyzed scopes of activities of daily living. This form of comprehensive rehabilitation should be promoted for the benefit of improving the quality of lives of such patients.
