Summary
Background and aims: The important variance of the number of general practitioners´ consultations caused by different diseases can be easily noticed in everyday observation. The most frequent reason leading to GP consultations are respiratory tract infections (RTIs). The aim of the study was to compare within different age groups the frequency of consultations caused by RTIs with those caused by cardiovascular diseases and the need for prescription only. Materials and methods: The study was conducted between out-patients belonging to one of GP practices in Łódź-Górna. Out of approximately 2000 patients, files of 335 patients (divided in age groups: 1-6, 7-13, 14-18, 19-64 and 65 over) were selected and analysed. Results: The most frequent reason for patient consultations were respiratory tract infections. The annual number of consultations in children aged 1-6 and elderly was twice as big as in the other age groups. Cardiovascular diseases constituted frequent reason for consultations only in elderly. In the same age group the need for repeated prescription was the frequent reason for consultations. The average number of consultations connected with RTIs decreased with age. Conclusions: Respiratory tract infections are the frequent reason of GP consultations. The number of consultations connected with RTIs differs in various patient age groups and tends to decrease with age.
