Summary
Gastrointestinal bleeding is frequent symptom of gastrointestinal pathology. It is described as an urgent case and requires radical treatment. Massive bleeding occures when patient has lost at least one liter of blood. Symptoms depend on massiveness and duration time of bleeding. They are melanemesis, hematemesis and melena. Duodenal and gastric ulcer, erosive gastritis, oesophageal varices, gastric and colon cancer ulcerative colits are the most important causes of gastrointestinal bleeding. Diagnosis is based on anamnesis, blood sampling for haematology and biochemistry, gastric probing and mainly on endoscopy or radiological exam, seldom on angiographical and isotopic procedures. Treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding includes pharmocotherapy, endoscopic procedures, catheter therapy and chirurgical intervention. Upper and lower part of gastrointestinal tract bleeding differs in treatment methods.
