Summary
The authors present a case of a 20-month-old boy with Hemophilus influenzae meningitis. The boy was admitted to hospital in a serious condition – 3 days of fever accompanied by vomiting. After the physical examination and laboratory tests the authors suspected meningitis. Additional empirical treatment was initializated after the neuroimaging check-up and lumbar puncture. The culture of cerebro-spinal fluid and blood confirmed etiology of H. influenzae. Hospitalization was complicated by rotavirus infection and staphylococcal poisoning from catheter. The patient's condition had improved, but despite proper treatment in the control MRI described postinflammatory changes in the brain, in the form of hematoma and cyst flattening the right hemisphere of the brain. The patient required several weeks of hospitalization and rehabilitation.
In the times of massive migration of people around the world and the constant increase of the number of unvaccinated children, we must be ready to challenge the infections, the occurrence of which was less and less frequent thanks to vaccinations.
