Summary
Children suffering from disorders of the cardiovascular system are at higher risk of complications due the infectious diseases. Respiratory tract infections are extremely dangerous for patients suffering from complex cyanotic congenital heart diseases or cardiomyopathies, leading to exacerbation of symptoms of the heart failure with important decrease of the blood oxygenation. Many of those can be prevented with proper vaccination and immunoprophylaxis. This is particularly important in respect of infections with Streptococcus pneumoniae, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza virus. Due to frequent admissions, contacts with other patients, operations performed using cardiopulmonary by-pass, treatment in intensive care units, blood transfusions, etc. Those patients are also at higher risk of nosocomial infections and should be protected against infections with hepatitis B virus, Neisseria meningitidis, rotavirus and varicella. Patients with cardiovascular disorders should be vaccinated according to the national vaccination scheme. Authors review recommendations and up to date literature on vaccinations and immunoprophylaxis in this population of patients.
