Summary
Introduction. Sphenoid sinus develop slowly from a small recess until the full spread all over the shaft of the sphenoid bone, which accounts for roughly 15 years of age. Sinusitis are fairly common problem in ENT medical practice. Isolated inflammation of the sphenoid sinus is a rare inflammation of the sinuses, which gives non-specific symptoms of inflammation of that bay. One of the tests used in the diagnosis of sinusitis is a computed tomography.
The development of radiol ogy, the introduction of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging for universal diagnostics, facilitated a faster diagnosis and treatment of isolated sphenoid sinus inflammation.
Aim. The aim of this study was to analyze the cases of patients hospitalized for isolated sphenoid sinusitis in the Department of Pediatric Otolaryngology SPDSK in Warsaw.
Material and methods. The study included 6 patients hospitalized in 2014-2016 at the Department of Pediatric Otolaryngology SPDSK in Warsaw for isolated sphenoid sinusitis. This study is a retrospective study.
Results. Isolated inflammation of the sphenoid sinus is quite rare and therefore in our study group there were six patients, two boys and four girls, ranging in age from 4 to 17 years. There have been 3 cases of isolated sphenoid sinus inflammation on the right side, right in this one sphenoid sinus cyst, 2 cases of inflammation of the left sphenoid sinus, and one case of bilateral sphenoid sinusitis. All patients presented with non-specific headaches.
Conclusions. The diagnosis making by history and basic ENT examination may result in wrong diagnosis. This is due to non-specific symptoms that patients present and the anatomical location of the sphenoid sinus, leading to a difficulty in assessing the primary ENT examination.
