Summary
Geraniol is a monoterpene alcohol with pleasant rose-like odor known as an important constituent of essential oil of ginger, lemon, lime, lavender, nutmeg, orange, rose and a safe commercial fragrance compound with the variety of biochemical and pharmacological properties. It is secreted by the blooming flowers as the attract pollinators. On the other hand, it has the strong insecticidal properties and is used as ingredient in many formulations against mosquitoes and ticks. Additionally, numerous studies in vitro and in vivo have proved geraniol activity against prostate, intestine, liver, kidney, and skin cancer. It can induce apoptosis and increase expression of the proapoptotic proteins. Synergy of it with other drugs may further increase the range of chemotherapeutic agents. Other its biological activities such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects have also been investigated. Antibacterial activity of this compound against respiratory tract pathogens and strains derived from food also was observed. This review discuss some of the most important applications of geraniol.
