Summary
Pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo) occurs in the culture as the symbol of fertility, health and abundance, as well as youth serum. Considered to be an aphrodisiac it contributes to proper functioning of testicles and prostate, regular spermatogenesis and maintains man’s libido due to great content of zinc in its seeds. It plays a great role in folk medicine as a remedy to helminthiases, tapeworm, gastroenteritis, urological diseases and prostatic hypertrophy. Pumpkin flesh, seeds and oil contains plenty of microelements, vitamins and antioxidants. Researches have shown that pumpkin plays a great role in prophylaxis and treatment of atherosclerosis, type II diabetes mellitus and hypertension due to its hipolipidemic, hypoglycemic and hypotonic effect. Low caloric pumpkin flesh may be included in slimming diet in treatment of obesity. Eating Cucurbita pepo proves to be a good way of having healthy lifestyle, maintaining fertility and as a primary prevention measure of numerous ailments due to its commonness and easy cultivation.
