Summary
Damiana – Turnera diffusa Willd. ex Schult. (varieties: T. d. var. aphrodisiaca (Ward.) Urb. and T.d. var. diffusa Willd. ex Schult.) belongs to the family Passifloraceae (subfamily Turneroideae). It is a small shrub 1-2 m high, spread throughout Mexico, Central America, and West Indies, as well as parts of South America. Its aromatic, serrate and 10-25 cm long leaves, harvested during the flowering season, are used for medicinal purposes. The main goal of our paper is to summing up the current knowledge on the chemical composition and biological properties of this plant, which confirms its aphrodisiac, sedative, gastroprotective, antioxidant and cytotoxic activities. Damiana shows a strong, positive effect on male potency, which is comparable to the effect exerted by a synthetic drug – sildenafil. It is also worthy to note the antioxidant properties of this plant, thanks to which it can be used in prevention of many diseases.
