Summary
Fruit teas are very popular in many European countries (including Poland). Because of the potential health benefits, they provide an interesting alternative to traditional tea. In this paper, the characteristics of fruit teas with a list of the identified plant raw materials were presented. For plant ingredients, their frequency and relative share in the studied blends were determined. The attention was also paid to flavours, acidity regulators and other food additives. In the analyzes, 187 fruit and fruit-herbal teas in bags, widely available in the retail chains in Poland were used. In the names of investigated products, we most frequently recorded raspberry (44 times) as well as cranberry (23), wild rose (20), so--called forest fruits (15), strawberry (14) and blackcurrant (13). There were about 60 different plant raw materials. Hibiscus, apple, rosehip and chokeberry belonged to the most important of them. Most frequently reported hibiscus was noted in 84% of the analyzed samples. Despite the large wealth of ingredients, many plant materials occurred sporadically and in small quantities, and names of teas were not always properly reflected in their composition. Hence, it was the constant presence of flavours (79% of the products). In the investigated fruit and fruit-herbal teas, natural sweeteners: licorice, Chinese (sweet) blackberry (Rubus suavissimus) and vanilla were noted too.
