Summary
The aim of the study was to examine activity of propolis extracts against moulds. There were six strains of moulds examined in the study: Aspergillus niger, Penicillium pinophilum, Trichoderma virens, Aspergillus versicolor, Paecilomyces variotii and Chaetomium globosum. The antifungal test was performed by methods of serial dilutions on fluid media – Sabouraud Broth. The MIC and MFC of the selected propolis extracts were determined in relation to A. niger in the preliminary research. A. niger and the other five moulds species were used in the second step of study, where the acetone and ethanolic extracts were already selected. The acetone extract showed the highest antifungal activity. Other propolis extracts showed lower activity against examined moulds. It has been proved that propolis extracts are potential antifungal substances for eco-friendly wood protection.
