Summary
The digestive tract is the second-largest structure of the human body. The human intestine is populated by an array of bacterial species, which develop important metabolic and immune functions with a marked effect on the nutritional and health status of the host. Currently, there is no doubt that the composition of intestinal microorganisms and their beneficial adaptation using products and preparations of pro- and prebiotic may protect from intestinal ailments. Moreover it contributes to the overall improvement of the human body condition. Although, there is a significant increase of publications about human intestinal microflora, the literature rarely provides information on the effects of plant extracts on the intestinal bacteria. Medicinal plants may affect the human body by inhibiting or modifying the composition of the microflora. Eliminating certain species of microflora may lead to restriction or lack of ability to metabolize food ingredients to their bioactive forms. Therefore, using plant preparations should also take into account their impact on the intestinal microflora. This review describes proper intestinal microflora, its importance to the human body, causes and consequences the modification of microorganisms composition and different influence of plants on intestinal bacteria.
