Summary
Botanical preparation are easily available to consumers and they are sold in pharmacies and also in supermarkets, herbalists and other shops. Nowadays, herbal medicines have become a popular option in healthcare. Plants and parts of plants or their preparations can occur concurrently in herbal medicinal products, diet supplements and foodstuffs for particular nutritional uses. The dietary supplements are defined as foodstuffs and contain vitamins and minerals, different substances as amino acids, fatty acids, fiber, probiotic microorganisms, honey, enzymes and crude plant material such as leaves, flowers, fruit, seed, roots or other plant parts, which may be entire, fragmented or powdered and also herbal materials and preparations. The role of this products is supplementation the normal diet. Foods for particular nutritional uses (dietetic foods) are specially manufactured to satisfy the particular nutritional requirements of specific groups of people. Dietary supplements and foodstuffs for particular nutritional uses as food are regulated by articles resulting from European Union regulations and directives and also Polish low. A lot of interactions can arise between herbal medicines, synthetic drugs and also regular food leading to serious clinical consequences. Many herbal products are marketed as “natural”, which may lead consumers to assume the products are safe, even when taken with prescription medicines. That is why, physicians and pharmacists should ask their patients about the use of herbal products to avoid herb-drug-food interactions.
