Summary
Chickweed (Stellaria media Vill.) is a cosmopolitan cool-season annual weed widely spread in Europe, Northern America and Asia except Arctic. Due to high nutritional value it is used as a leaf vegetable, often raw in salads. Has always been the bane of gardeners, as only a very low temperature inhibits its development. It is very much an expansive plant. Its stems grow very quickly. It has enormous energies of life, which is reflected in the rapid growth, as well as the fact that he can grow even under the snow. In folk medicine S. media is used to cure inflammation, skin diseases, arthritis, bronchitis, asthma, etc. It contains vitamin E, rutin, niacin, riboflavin, thiamin, ascorbic acid, beta-carotene, flavonoids, gamma-linolenic acid, and mineral compounds, especially potassium. Today it is a valuable material for herbalists and phytotherapy. Formerly appreciated as a herb with many medicinal properties, but mainly accounted for poultry feed, and sometimes became a food, especially in winter.
