Chickweed (Stellaria media Vill.) is a cosmopolitan cool-season annual weed widely spread in Europe, Northern America and Asia except Arctic. In folk medicine S. media is used to cure inflammation, skin diseases, arthritis, bronchitis, asthma, etc. It contains vitamin E, rutin, niacin, riboflavin, thiamin, ascorbic acid, beta-carotene, flavonoids, gamma-linolenic acid, and mineral compounds, especially potassium. Today it is a valuable material for herbalists and phytotherapy. Formerly appreciated as a herb with many medicinal properties, but mainly accounted for poultry feed, and sometimes became a food, especially in winter.
