Summary
Professor Tadeusz Koszarowski was the creator of surgical oncology in Poland and the author of the definition of “Oncology”. He was also an organizer of the Polish network of Cancer Centers and initiator of the epidemiological studies of cancer. The article presents the silhouette of Professor Tadeusz Koszarowski with particular emphasis on the period of early adolescence, studies and German occupation in Poland (1939-1945), during which he participated in September 1939 Campaign and as an assistant at Wolski Hospital was involved in underground activities and secret medical studies. In 1943 he was arrested and imprisoned in Pawiak. During the Warsaw Uprising he organized insurgent hospital on Prague (district of Warsaw). After the war, he supervised the reconstruction of the capital’s hospitals and continued training in surgical oncology. He served as Head of Department of Surgery of the Institute of Oncology in Warsaw in the years 1948-1972, and Director of the Institute of Oncology in the years 1972-1985. Maria Skłodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Centre and Institute of Oncology was created through his initiative and indomitable will.
