Summary
According to the Regulation of the Polish Parliament of 6th September 2001 concerning Infectious Diseases and Infections, new National Immunization Program was introduced for the year 2004. The Immunization Program underwent regular changes based on new epidemiological and microbiological data. Major changes have been made in compulsory vaccination program, such as, vaccination against poliomyelitis, mumps, rubella, pertussis and H.influenzae type b infections (Hib). Current recommendations of poliomyelitis immunization are based on 3-dose schedule of inactivated polio vaccine (IPV), given in 3th, 5th and 16-18th months, and booster dose of atenuated vaccine (OPV) in 6th year of life. According to recent epidemiological data, additional booster dose of acelullar pertussis vaccine, given as DTaP vaccine, was introduced in 6th year of life. For the first time, in Polish immunization program, one dose in 13-14th month of life of the combination vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella was implemented. Important change concerns prevention of H.influenzae type b infections in high risk children. Conjugated Hib vaccine, in the schedule recommended by the manufacturers, is given in all children from orphanages in the first and second year of life.
