Summary
Arrhythmias are detected in around 1-10% of newborns, majority of them have transient character and don’t require treatment. Authors present a case of benign cardiac arrhythmia diagnosed in newborn, with a history of arrhythmia observed during fetal life. The child was in a good general condition after birth with no signs of heart failure.
Electrocardiogram and 24 hour Holter monitoring performed in the first days of life showed premature supraventricular beats (5% of total heart beats), single and couplets, and episodes of bradycardia with minimal heart rate 71 bpm caused by non-conducted atrial premature beats.
Biochemical and metabolic disorders, congenital heart defects, cardiomyopathies, myocarditis, Wolf Parkinson White syndrome and defects of the central nervous system were excluded as a cause of arrhythmia.
Follow up ECG and 24-hour Holter monitoring performed in the 2nd month of life were normal.
Based on clinical course and results of additional tests the diagnosis of benign arrhythmia was established.
