Summary
Fruits are the source of many substances: vitamins, mineral nutrients, antioxidants and fiber. Physicians recommend daily consumption of at least three portions of products from this group. Apples are among the most popular fruits in Poland, to which we have an easy access. Our country is one of the biggest suppliers of apples – in 2011 we were 1st in EU and 5th in the world with 2.49 mln tons produced. However, Poles eat relatively small amounts of apples, on average only 1 per week, that is 15 kg per year. Apples contain many essential nutrients. Numerous studies on the effects of substances present in apples on humans have been conducted. Positive effect on many diseases such as cancers, diabetes, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, asthma, hyperlipidaemia have been reported. The effort of scientists focuses mainly on antioxidants, pectins and phenols. Flavonoids and triterpenoids reduce the risk of many cancers, including colorectal, hepatic, mammary and prostate cancers. Quercetin has a protective influence on the toxicity of β-amyloid plaques in Alzheimer’s disease and probably inhibits selective death of dopamine neurons caused by neurotoxin MPP+ in Parkinson’s disease. Pectins and phenols improve the distribution of lipids in plasma. The goal of this dissertation is to present the health benefits of regular consumption of apples.
